Joe Cole Explains Why Chelsea Need Lewandowski and Stones in Xabi Alonso Era
Joe Cole believes Chelsea must add proven experience to their squad this summer and has urged the club to target John Stones and Robert Lewandowski ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The former Blues star feels Chelsea’s young squad needs leadership from players who understand how to win major honours, especially after the club endured a difficult Premier League season that ended with a tenth-place finish.

New chapter begins at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea are entering a new phase under Xabi Alonso, who will officially begin his role as manager in July after signing a four-year agreement with the club.
Alonso was selected as Chelsea’s preferred replacement for Liam Rosenior following the end of Rosenior’s disappointing spell in charge. Although the squad contains significant young talent, concerns remain over the lack of experienced figures within the team.
Cole believes Chelsea should focus on smart additions rather than rebuilding the entire squad, especially given uncertainty surrounding the club’s financial situation.
Speaking to football.london, he explained: “We don’t know what the finances are. So it’s alright saying that we’re going to buy that player and buy that player. We may have to sell players, we don’t know. One thing we’re sure we don’t want is wholesale changes because these young players that you had belief in three years ago: they’re still the same players.”
Why Stones and Lewandowski fit Chelsea’s needs
Cole identified John Stones and Robert Lewandowski as ideal signings because of the success and experience they would bring into the dressing room.
Stones recently ended his decorated period at Manchester City after winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League. Lewandowski also became available following his goal-filled spell with Barcelona, where he scored 120 goals across four seasons.
According to Cole, players of that calibre would act as leaders on the pitch while also helping younger players handle pressure during matches.
“They just need what I’ve been saying for two or three years, where you have experience around them within the group that helps them through games to coach them, whilst on the pitch to give them their wisdom, you know, and build it out that way,” Cole said.
“And then you bring in your John Stones and Robert Lewandowski and players on a free transfer who don’t need to play every minute of every game, but they understand winning, they understand culture and they can still help out in the pitch and do bits.”
Cole highlights importance of dressing room leadership
Cole warned that Chelsea risk limiting their progress if they continue without enough experienced figures in the squad.
The former England international insisted that successful teams rely on leadership from within the dressing room, with senior players passing down knowledge and standards to younger teammates.
“The current players need that, they’ve got it within the group, it can’t be from coaches, all the time. All the great teams are coached from within their own dressing room and its knowledge and wisdom passed down over the years,” Cole concluded.
“It just baffles me how people just don’t understand that. But hopefully, they [the Chelsea owners] have read the room and that’s the way they go now. When you get to elite level, you need experience, you need wisdom and you need quality.”
