Former Man Utd Boss Ruben Amorim Set for Shock Benfica Return After Manchester United Departure

Ruben Amorim is close to making a return to management after his difficult spell at Manchester United. The Portuguese coach is being considered for a major role at SL Benfica, where he could replace Jose Mourinho.

Amorim has been out of work since leaving Manchester United in January. According to reports, Benfica view him as the leading candidate to take over at Estadio da Luz as they prepare for a managerial change ahead of the next season.

Despite his struggles in England, Amorim still holds a strong reputation in Portugal due to his successful spell with Sporting CP. Benfica’s interest has grown as Mourinho is reportedly expected to leave for a return to Real Madrid.

The managerial opening at Benfica has emerged following reports that Mourinho is set to move on after an unbeaten league campaign in Lisbon. However, despite that record, Benfica finished third and missed out on Champions League qualification, increasing uncertainty around the club’s future direction.

Reports also suggest that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has made contact with Mourinho over a potential return, which has accelerated Benfica’s search for a new manager.

A return to Benfica would be particularly meaningful for Amorim. He previously represented the club as a player and ended his playing career there in 2017. His connection to the club and its leadership remains strong, especially with president Rui Costa, who is believed to be a long-term admirer of his coaching abilities.

Amorim built his managerial reputation in Portugal, winning the league twice with Sporting CP in 2021 and 2024. He also lifted the Portuguese League Cup on multiple occasions, further strengthening his standing as one of the country’s top coaches.

His time at Manchester United ended after a difficult spell marked by internal tensions and inconsistent results. He managed 63 matches, winning 25 and losing 23, before being dismissed shortly after a draw against Leeds in the Premier League.

A potential move back to Portugal now offers Amorim a chance to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings and return to a club where he already has deep personal and professional ties.
