Pep Guardiola Addresses Erling Haaland Injury Fears After Manchester City’s Aston Villa Defeat
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided a brief update on Erling Haaland’s condition after the striker suffered a painful collision with the post during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park. The result ended City’s five-match unbeaten run and saw them lose further ground in the Premier League title race.

Matty Cash scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute, as Villa secured a hard-fought win over the defending champions. Haaland had several opportunities to equalise but was denied by Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and later saw a late effort ruled out for offside before crashing into the woodwork.
The Norwegian striker appeared to be in discomfort at full-time, sparking fears of a possible injury. Guardiola later confirmed he had not yet spoken to Haaland after the match but told reporters, “Hopefully he is fine,” easing immediate concerns over the forward’s fitness.
Manchester City were unable to take advantage of Liverpool’s defeat to Brentford the previous day, missing a chance to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal. The Gunners’ 1-0 win over Crystal Palace extended their lead at the top to six points over City, who have now lost three of their opening nine league fixtures.
Guardiola urged calm regarding the title race, emphasizing that his team must focus on improving their performances rather than monitoring rivals. “We try to close the gap. Arsenal have been solid for many years,” he said. “Our concern is how we improve to be close. Our job is not to watch the title. If they win all their games, congratulate them. I feel the team is alive, it’s good.”
Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery credited his players for effectively neutralising Haaland, who leads the Premier League scoring charts with 11 goals this season. “We tried tactically and individually to get duels with him intelligently and with power,” Emery explained. “We had defensive cover and help from the goalkeeper. We needed everything to stop him.”
Villa’s victory was a strong response following their Europa League loss to Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday, which ended a five-game winning streak across all competitions.
Guardiola is expected to rotate his squad for the midweek League Cup tie against Swansea City as Manchester City aim to secure a place in the quarter-finals. New signings Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki, both used as substitutes at Villa Park, could feature prominently as City manage squad fitness ahead of a demanding fixture schedule.
Following Wednesday’s cup tie, City face three consecutive home matches, including a Premier League clash with Bournemouth and a Champions League encounter against Borussia Dortmund. Guardiola’s side will also host Liverpool before the international break as the title race begins to take shape heading into the winter months.
