‎Wayne Rooney Shares Surreal Story of Snipers, Security and a Nuclear Warning During Golf Game With Donald Trump

‎A vivid account of a tense and unexpected moment emerged as Wayne Rooney described an extraordinary encounter with Donald Trump during a round of golf at Trump National. The former Manchester United and England striker revisited the moment on A League of Their Own, sharing how a casual outing with a friend quickly transformed into a heavily guarded and surreal experience.

‎Rooney was playing for MLS side DC United when the encounter took place, following his move to Washington in 2018. His on-field spell in the US featured 23 goals and 13 assists across 50 league appearances before he returned to England to join Derby in early 2020.
‎The invitation to the golf course came after a friend travelled from Manchester to visit him. The pair arrived expecting a simple game, only to discover security teams, sniffer dogs and staff on high alert. According to Rooney, the heightened activity was due to Trump learning of his visit and opting to join them.
‎Rooney recalled Trump’s security presence vividly. He explained how three Escalades followed them, including one equipped with a specialised box designed for emergency extraction during a nuclear threat. Upon asking what would happen to everyone else in such a scenario, Rooney recounted Trump’s blunt response: “You are f*cked.”
‎Further insight into the day came through Rooney’s conversation on The Overlap, where he described a buggy carrying Rudy Giuliani behind them, as well as dozens of security-driven golf carts. Snipers were stationed both in surrounding bushes and on a boat positioned in a nearby lake.
‎Trump also asked Rooney to provide football coaching for his son, Barron, during the player’s time in the United States. Rooney and his family were invited to the White House for a Christmas event hosted by Trump and the First Lady, Melania. Coleen Rooney later described her first exchange with Trump, recalling a moment that surprised her and left her mother unimpressed after hearing about it.
‎Rooney eventually returned to DC United as manager in July 2022, signing a deal through the 2023 season. The team did not reach the playoffs during his tenure, and he left the club in October 2023. His managerial path has since involved challenging spells with Birmingham and Plymouth. Rooney’s stint at Plymouth ended in December 2024, leaving him out of management after a difficult run of results.
