‎Thomas Frank Reveals Manchester United Job Interview in Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Garage Before Ruben Amorim Appointment

‎Premier League manager Thomas Frank has shared a remarkable moment from his career, recalling the day he interviewed for the Manchester United job inside Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s garage. The unusual meeting took place just hours before he held another high-level discussion with Chelsea during the summer of 2024, a period marked by parallel managerial searches at two of England’s biggest clubs.

‎Frank explained that Manchester United formally considered him as they assessed potential successors to Erik ten Hag. The conversation with Ratcliffe unfolded inside the billionaire’s garage while the United squad travelled to London ahead of the FA Cup final. Frank later travelled across the city for talks with Chelsea, who were assessing alternatives before appointing Enzo Maresca.
‎The Danish coach, then leading Brentford, had become a recognised Premier League success by guiding the club into the top flight and stabilising them as a consistent mid-table side. His rise placed him firmly on the radar of both United and Chelsea at a time when each club aimed to reshape its long-term football strategy. None of the interviews concluded with an immediate job offer, but both encounters showed the level of interest in his work.
‎Frank’s account confirmed that the United meeting happened shortly before the team’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City. The win extended Ten Hag’s tenure for several months before the club appointed Ruben Amorim in November 2024. Frank continued at Brentford until Tottenham triggered his release clause in 2025.
‎Speaking to Danish outlet TV2, Frank reflected on the experience, describing the day as surreal and emphasising what it represented for his career progression. He recalled walking through Battersea Park between the two interviews and recognising the significance of speaking with two elite clubs just two hours apart.
‎Details of the episode appear in the upcoming book Diary from the Premier League: The Story of Denmark’s Greatest Coach. The publication traces Frank’s coaching path from Danish football to the Premier League, documenting the increasing recognition he gained from clubs with major financial and historical influence. Chelsea’s approach occurred during another search for stability, while Manchester United sought new leadership after Ineos took charge of football operations.
‎The following year brought Frank’s biggest move. Tottenham parted ways with Ange Postecoglou after finishing 17th, prompting the club to activate Frank’s clause. He took over in June 2025 and has overseen a strong opening spell, guiding Spurs to five wins and three defeats in their first 11 Premier League matches.
‎Frank’s Tottenham side remains unbeaten in European competition and is preparing for a significant league test against Arsenal after the international break. His structured, high-intensity approach has provided a promising foundation early in his tenure.
