Ruben Amorim Encouraged to Promote Chido Obi Following Sesko Injury Blow
Ruben Amorim has been informed that Manchester United already possess a strong internal option to cover for Benjamin Sesko during the striker’s spell on the sidelines. The club had faced a tense wait after Sesko suffered a late injury in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham, prompting fears of a severe knee issue for the high-profile summer arrival.
Manchester United receive a boost as Benjamin Sesko’s knee scans show no major damage, with Dwight Yorke urging Ruben Amorim to promote Chido Obi.

Early concerns eased once further assessments clarified the situation. Sesko had come on in the second half before going down following a forceful challenge, immediately calling for medical assistance. All substitutions had been used, leaving United to finish the match with ten men. Amorim acknowledged the uncertainty post-match and highlighted the unpredictable nature of knee injuries.
Detailed medical examinations took place after Sesko withdrew from Slovenia’s World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo and Sweden. Scans at Carrington confirmed that no major ligament damage had occurred, providing a significant boost for the team. The forward stayed in Manchester to begin focused rehabilitation as medical staff prepared a full recovery plan. Sky Sports reported that Sesko is expected to miss up to a month of action.
Joshua Zirkzee is now the only senior striker available to Amorim, creating the possibility of tactical adjustments or internal cover. Former United forward Dwight Yorke believes the solution is already present within the squad pathway. He advised against short-term signings and urged United to place trust in their academy system, noting past attempts at temporary fixes that proved ineffective.
Yorke encouraged Amorim to give opportunities to emerging talents during Sesko’s absence. He stated that young players benefit from early integration with the first team and argued that emergency additions rarely provide the long-term impact required at a club of United’s stature.
One name highlighted by Yorke is 18-year-old Chido Obi. The Nigerian-born striker, signed from Arsenal in 2024, made seven Premier League appearances last season before returning to the under-23 squad this term. Yorke referenced his own experience at United, explaining that young players regularly trained with the seniors to prepare for situations such as this.
He suggested that Obi be considered as a short-term solution during Sesko’s recovery, emphasising United’s established tradition of developing youth and granting opportunities when needed.
Manchester United resume Premier League action on November 24 against Everton, a fixture Sesko will miss as his rehabilitation progresses. A potential return could come ahead of the December 21 trip to Aston Villa or the Boxing Day home match against Newcastle, depending on how his recovery advances.
