Amorim Details Manchester United Plans for Out-of-Favour Mainoo and Zirkzee

‎Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stressed that the club’s priorities will take precedence in the upcoming January transfer window. The Red Devils are currently evaluating squad options as out-of-favour duo Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee seek more playing opportunities ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

‎Mainoo has featured for just 259 minutes this season, while Zirkzee has made five substitute appearances and has not played since the victory over Brighton in October. Speculation has mounted over potential moves for both players during the winter transfer period, despite Amorim previously insisting that "everyone is needed" in the squad.
‎Addressing questions about the duo’s futures, Amorim reiterated that he wants to support his players but must prioritize Manchester United’s needs. He stated, "I understand the frustration of some players, seeing the World Cup is there. I know what it means. But the first thing is that the club comes first. If I can help the club and the players, I will be happy. If not I have to think about the team."
‎Manchester United’s squad considerations are further complicated by injuries and the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui are set to miss key fixtures, while striker Benjamin Sesko is sidelined with a month-long knee injury. These absences could create opportunities for Mainoo and Zirkzee to gain more minutes at Old Trafford and influence January transfer decisions.
‎Midfielder Manuel Ugarte has also struggled for form since joining Manchester United. Amorim, who previously managed Ugarte at Sporting, acknowledged the midfielder’s difficulties while expressing confidence that he can improve. "He is struggling in the moment, but it is our job to try to help our players," Amorim explained, highlighting the need for adaptation and improvement, particularly during training.
‎Manchester United aim to continue their five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League when they face Everton at Old Trafford. Amorim stressed the importance of maintaining urgency and focus, warning that in the Premier League, circumstances can change rapidly, and any team is capable of winning on any given day.
