‎Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender when he joined Manchester United in 2019 but later faced difficult periods after being stripped of the captaincy and dropped to the bench. Under Ruben Amorim’s management, he has reclaimed a key role, earning back his place through consistent performances and leadership in United’s back three.
‎Rooney admitted he had initial doubts about Amorim’s team selection ahead of the Liverpool clash, particularly with players like Leny Yoro and Benjamin Sesko starting on the bench. However, Maguire justified his inclusion by heading home an 84th-minute winner that sealed an important victory at Anfield. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast, Rooney said the manager “got his tactics absolutely spot on” and highlighted Maguire’s value to the team.
‎The former United and England captain reflected on the criticism Maguire has faced in recent years, describing how the defender became a frequent target of online jokes and even political references abroad. Rooney acknowledged the mental toughness required to endure such treatment, saying Maguire’s resilience and professionalism have shown remarkable strength. He noted that despite losing the captain’s armband and becoming a subject of mockery, Maguire continued to perform for both club and country.
‎Rooney believes Maguire deserves a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup. He highlighted Maguire’s leadership qualities, influence in the dressing room, and importance during set-piece situations. The Manchester United icon emphasized that Maguire’s attitude, even after losing his captaincy to Bruno Fernandes, demonstrates commitment and maturity at the highest level.
‎Maguire, who has earned 64 England caps since his debut in 2017, remains determined to secure a new Manchester United contract before his current deal expires in 2026. His recent performances suggest he could play a crucial role for both club and country in the coming years, as he looks to cement his place under Amorim and reclaim his spot in the national setup.
