Roy Keane Urges Manchester United to Appoint Diego Simeone as Pressure Mounts on Ruben Amorim
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has identified Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone as the perfect manager to restore the club’s identity if Ruben Amorim’s tenure comes to an early end.
Amorim has managed only a 29 percent win rate since his appointment nearly a year ago, raising questions about his long-term future at Old Trafford. Though minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reaffirmed his public support for the Portuguese coach, growing unrest among fans suggests patience may be wearing thin.

The current situation mirrors the downfall of Erik ten Hag, who was backed by the board shortly before being dismissed. Amorim’s recent results, including two wins from three against Chelsea and Sunderland, have done little to ease scrutiny. Roy Keane, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, humorously remarked that Amorim deserves “another week,” but his tone hinted at skepticism regarding the manager’s ability to revive Manchester United’s trademark grit and dominance.
Keane praised Atletico Madrid’s long-serving coach Diego Simeone, describing him as the embodiment of the intensity and discipline United have lacked in recent years. The Argentine tactician has guided Atletico to two La Liga titles, multiple Champions League finals, and consistent top-four finishes during his 14-year reign.
“I’d like to see Simeone go there,” Keane said. “He’d create havoc, but good havoc. He’d bring his personality, his track record, and that fighting mentality.”
Simeone’s fiery leadership style has often captured headlines. Last month, he was sent off at Anfield following a heated confrontation with a Liverpool supporter, an incident that later earned him a UEFA touchline ban for unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite his controversies, his ability to inspire fight and unity in his teams remains unquestioned.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has continued to stand by Amorim, emphasizing that long-term vision outweighs short-term disappointment. During a recent visit to Carrington alongside club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, Ratcliffe discussed the project’s direction with the manager.
“He has not had the best of seasons,” Ratcliffe said on The Business podcast. “Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions.”
Ratcliffe also dismissed speculation that the Glazers might intervene in managerial decisions, insisting that the INEOS group has “feet on the ground” and remains committed to stability.
The upcoming fixture against Liverpool after the international break could define Amorim’s immediate future. A victory would offer much-needed breathing space, but another defeat could intensify calls for change.
With Roy Keane advocating for Simeone’s arrival and fans demanding progress, the pressure continues to mount. Amorim’s challenge is clear—deliver results or risk becoming the next casualty in Manchester United’s ongoing quest for revival.
