'Not Normal!': Ruben Amorim Fires Back at Critics Who Said He'd Be Sacked Before Christmas After Man Utd's Win Over Liverpool
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has delivered a defiant response to critics who doubted his future, following the team’s crucial 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. The result marked United’s first back-to-back Premier League wins under Amorim since his arrival in November 2024.

The Red Devils endured a turbulent campaign last season, finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Determined to rebuild, Amorim made major squad changes during the summer, focusing on attacking reinforcements with the high-profile signings of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha.
Despite the significant investment, United began the 2025–26 season poorly, managing only two wins in their first six league matches and suffering an early Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town. The recent upturn in form has come as a relief to fans, as United followed up their 2-0 win over Sunderland with a memorable triumph at Anfield — their first victory there in nine years.
Amorim addressed the media after the Liverpool win, taking aim at those who claimed he would be “gone before Christmas.” The Portuguese coach emphasized the importance of the victory and praised his players for their resilience and teamwork.
“It is really important. I don’t have many wins in Manchester,” Amorim said. “Every detail of this game, the spirit when we suffered or controlled moments — all the small things were perfect. It is hard to find this kind of support when everyone is saying the manager will be gone before Christmas.”
Even during United’s difficult start to the season, Amorim remained composed and confident about his position. Following a defeat to Brentford last month, he reiterated his commitment to the club and belief in the project, saying he was never worried about being dismissed.
“I am always comfortable with the job. I am not concerned — it is not my decision,” Amorim stated. “I know what to do and take responsibility. We can play better and we need to play better. Momentum comes and goes, but I’m confident Manchester United will get back.”
Team captain Bruno Fernandes publicly defended Amorim’s tactics following the win, highlighting the importance of sticking with the manager’s philosophy. Speaking to Sky Sports, Fernandes said: “Our shape always gives teams issues. It’s ungrateful to talk about shape only when we lose. We believe in the system and what we prepare is what gives us the win.”
Manchester United will look to extend their winning streak when they face Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday, aiming for a third consecutive league victory under Amorim.
