Manchester United Join Barcelona and Real Madrid in Transfer Battle for Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano

‎Bayern Munich could be facing another major transfer setback as contract negotiations with French defender Dayot Upamecano remain unresolved. The 26-year-old’s uncertain future has sparked strong interest from European powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid, with Manchester United also monitoring the situation closely ahead of the January transfer window.

‎The France international, a key part of Vincent Kompany’s defensive setup, has yet to reach an agreement on a new deal beyond 2026. Negotiations have reportedly stalled due to wage demands, as Upamecano’s representatives push for a package close to €15 million per year along with a substantial signing bonus. Bayern Munich are eager to retain the centre-back but face mounting pressure to avoid a repeat of David Alaba’s free transfer departure.
‎Bayern president Herbert Hainer reaffirmed the club’s desire to keep Upamecano, stating that talks are ongoing and expressing confidence in a long-term stay. Sporting director Max Eberl is leading discussions to secure an agreement before January, when the player becomes eligible to negotiate pre-contract terms with clubs outside Germany.
‎Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are preparing to go head-to-head for Upamecano’s signature. Reports from Foot Mercato suggest the rivalry between the two Spanish giants could extend to the transfer market, with the French defender viewed as a prime target. Real Madrid see him as a potential replacement for Antonio Rudiger or David Alaba, whereas Barcelona are aiming to strengthen a defense hit by frequent injuries.
‎Interest from England further complicates the race. Manchester United and Liverpool are keeping close tabs on the situation as part of their defensive rebuilding plans. Upamecano, capped 34 times for France, is regarded as one of Europe’s most complete centre-backs—known for his pace, strength, and composure on the ball. His role under Kompany remains vital, but the ongoing contract impasse has created growing uncertainty about his long-term future at Bayern.
‎Bayern are expected to meet Upamecano’s camp again in the coming weeks to find common ground. Should no agreement be reached, the defender will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January, setting the stage for one of the most competitive transfer battles of the upcoming window. The outcome of these talks could have lasting implications for Bayern’s defensive lineup and wage structure.
