Liverpool Urged to Drop Jeremie Frimpong as Don Hutchison Calls for Conor Bradley to Start
Former Scotland international Don Hutchison has called for Liverpool manager Arne Slot to bench Jeremie Frimpong, insisting the Dutch defender’s performances have fallen below the club’s expectations. The summer signing has yet to find form since joining from Bayer Leverkusen, leading Hutchison to suggest Conor Bradley should be given a starting opportunity at right-back.

Frimpong arrived at Anfield in a €35 million transfer as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, bringing high hopes following his standout spell in the Bundesliga. His speed and attacking flair made him a key figure at Leverkusen, but adapting to Liverpool’s system under Slot has proven difficult. The 23-year-old has played just 79 minutes across three Premier League games, recording no goals or assists, and has faced increasing scrutiny for defensive lapses and misplaced passes.
Hutchison criticised Frimpong’s recent displays, citing repeated errors and low confidence during key fixtures. He noted that the full-back struggled against Southampton and Galatasaray, suggesting the young defender is still adjusting to the demands of English football. The former Everton midfielder argued that Liverpool’s defensive balance would improve with Bradley’s inclusion, describing the Northern Irishman as more composed and reliable in possession.
Frimpong’s adjustment has been complicated by the tactical shift from his previous role at Leverkusen, where he operated primarily as an advanced wing-back. Slot’s setup at Liverpool demands stronger defensive positioning, awareness, and discipline — areas where Frimpong has shown inconsistency. Analysts have also highlighted difficulties in tracking back and handling transitions, which have affected Liverpool’s stability on the right side.
Bradley, who impressed during last season’s injury-hit campaign, offers a blend of defensive solidity and attacking intelligence that aligns more closely with Slot’s current needs. His performances have strengthened the argument for rotation, particularly as Liverpool seek stability after an uneven start to the season.
Frimpong’s challenges come at a time when the team as a whole is still adjusting under Slot’s leadership. Liverpool’s mixed results in domestic and European competitions have amplified focus on individual performances. With key fixtures ahead and Mohamed Salah expected to miss matches during the Africa Cup of Nations, the right flank could undergo further reshuffling.
Frimpong’s attacking qualities remain valuable, yet his consistency will determine whether he secures a long-term role in Slot’s system. The coming weeks may offer both a test and an opportunity for the Dutchman to regain confidence and adapt to the intensity of Premier League football.
