‎Ruben Amorim’s position as Manchester United boss has faced scrutiny following the club’s disappointing start to the 2025-26 campaign. After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season and ending the campaign without a trophy, Amorim embarked on a major squad overhaul during the summer transfer window. The club invested heavily to bring in players such as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, while several long-serving players, including Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony, departed Old Trafford.
‎The new-look squad struggled to find rhythm at the start of the new season, managing just two wins from their first six Premier League matches. United also suffered a shock Carabao Cup exit at the hands of fourth-division side Grimsby Town, further intensifying pressure on Amorim.
‎Momentum shifted recently as the Red Devils claimed consecutive league victories over Sunderland and Liverpool, marking their first back-to-back wins under Amorim. The victory at Anfield was especially significant, as it was Manchester United’s first triumph there in nine years.
‎Former Premier League Star Endorses Simeone for United Job
‎Former Arsenal and Everton midfielder Anders Limpar weighed in on United’s managerial situation, naming Simeone as his top choice to succeed Amorim if a change is made. Speaking to Hajper, Limpar praised the Argentine’s demanding style and strong work ethic, noting that his leadership could transform Manchester United’s dressing room.
‎“Diego Simeone is definitely a good manager to manage any Premier League team,” Limpar said. “It all comes down to the right environment and the players. We’ve seen managers like Antonio Conte bring similar energy and win titles. Simeone demands so much from his players, and his work rate expectations are incredible. Imagine having that at United — he would have them working like mad dogs.”
‎Roy Keane Also Urges United to Consider Simeone
‎Manchester United legend Roy Keane echoed Limpar’s sentiments, suggesting that Simeone’s arrival could inject much-needed intensity into the club. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane said he would welcome the idea of Simeone taking charge at Old Trafford.
‎“I’ve said it for years — I’d like Atletico Madrid’s Simeone to go there,” Keane explained. “He’d bring personality, a strong track record, and discipline. People might think about styles of football, but his teams fight, they play, and they don’t give up goals easily. He’d create havoc — but good havoc.”
‎Amorim Responds After Liverpool Victory
‎Following Manchester United’s 2–1 victory at Anfield, Amorim responded to his critics with a pointed message, highlighting the importance of the win. The Portuguese coach noted that many had predicted his dismissal before Christmas, using the triumph to underline his commitment to turning the season around.
‎“It is really important,” Amorim said after the match. “Every detail of this game, the spirit when we suffered bad moments, everything was perfect. It’s really important for our fans. They went through difficult times, and now they can see a different team.”
‎Manchester United’s recent resurgence has eased pressure on Amorim, but continued speculation about his future remains, with Diego Simeone emerging as a strong candidate should a managerial change occur.
