‎New Role for Ruben Amorim? Sacked Manchester United Boss Tipped for Rapid Return to Management

‎Ruben Amorim could be set for an immediate return to the dugout following his dismissal from Manchester United, with reports suggesting the Portuguese coach will not remain unemployed for long. Despite leaving the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League, Amorim’s outspoken criticism of the club’s hierarchy is believed to have played a decisive role in ending his spell at Old Trafford. Now, the 40-year-old is being touted as a possible replacement for a high-profile managerial figure elsewhere.
‎Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is already being linked with a quick comeback to management just days after his Old Trafford exit, with a potential return to Portugal on the cards.

‎Tensions had reportedly been growing behind the scenes between Amorim and members of United’s leadership, particularly director of football Jason Wilcox. However, few anticipated the strength of the comments Amorim delivered publicly after United’s 1-1 draw away to Leeds United on Sunday. In that post-match address, he challenged what he saw as board-level interference and stressed that his role was that of a manager, not merely a coach.
‎Speaking to the media, Amorim made his position clear by insisting he was hired to manage Manchester United in full, rather than operate under constraints. He emphasised that while his name may not carry the same weight as figures such as Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte, or Jose Mourinho, he was still the club’s manager and expected to operate as such for the duration of his agreed term. Amorim added that he had no intention of resigning and planned to continue working until replaced by the club.
‎He went on to reiterate that his responsibilities extended across all departments, explaining that scouting and sporting leadership had their own duties, while he would focus on managing the team. Amorim also stated that criticism from pundits and former players was part of football and suggested the club itself needed to adapt if it could not cope with external scrutiny.
‎Just 24 hours later, Manchester United brought Amorim’s turbulent 14-month reign to an end. The club released an official statement confirming his departure, explaining that the decision was made to maximise their chances of achieving the best possible outcome for the remainder of the season.
‎In their announcement, United acknowledged Amorim’s contribution since his appointment in November 2024, highlighting his role in guiding the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao last May. With the club currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the leadership said the timing of the change was intended to provide the squad with the best opportunity for a strong league finish, while wishing Amorim well in the future.
‎Attention has now turned to Amorim’s next destination. According to the Daily Mail, he is a leading candidate to take over at Benfica should the Lisbon club decide to part ways with Jose Mourinho. The former Chelsea manager is under mounting pressure, with Benfica trailing league leaders Porto by 10 points and sitting 25th in the Champions League league-phase standings. As a result, Amorim is being widely tipped as a potential successor.
‎Despite a disappointing spell at Manchester United that produced a win rate of just 38.10 percent, Amorim’s reputation appears to remain intact, and he may have multiple opportunities available in the near future.
‎Meanwhile, Manchester United are moving quickly in their search for a new permanent head coach. After under-18s coach Darren Fletcher oversaw a 2-2 draw against Burnley on Wednesday, the club has stepped up efforts to appoint Amorim’s replacement. Former United manager and club icon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly in discussions over a return to Old Trafford, though the length and nature of any potential spell remain unclear. Fletcher is expected to take charge again on Sunday when United face Bright in the third round of the FA Cup.
