The overall transfer package is understood to be worth £62.5 million ($84m), with the potential for the fee to increase by an additional £1.5m if certain performance-related conditions are met. City have managed to secure the attacker for slightly below the £65m release clause included in his Bournemouth contract, while the Cherries have negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Semenyo’s reputation has risen sharply since his move from Bristol City to Bournemouth in January 2023. His development has been rapid, culminating in an impressive return of 13 goals in all competitions last season. That form has continued into the current campaign, with the forward already reaching double figures once again.
Manchester City have described their new signing as “one of the Premier League’s most feared forwards,” underlining the impact he has made in England’s top flight. Semenyo is expected to immediately compete for a place under Pep Guardiola and could be in line to make his debut in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg clash against Newcastle.
Speaking to City’s official website, Semenyo explained why the move represented the perfect next step in his career and highlighted Guardiola’s influence on his decision. He said he was proud to join a club that has dominated English football over the past decade while also enjoying major success in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. He praised the club’s elite standards, world-class squad, facilities and the opportunity to work under one of football’s greatest managers.
The winger also spoke about his desire to improve further, describing the timing of the move as ideal. He expressed confidence that his best performances are still ahead of him and believes he can play a role in helping City push strongly through the second half of the season, with the club still competing on four fronts. Semenyo added that he is excited to make the Etihad his new home and is eager to perform in front of City supporters.
City faced strong competition for Semenyo’s signature, with Liverpool linked amid uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah’s long-term future at Anfield. Manchester United were also reported to be monitoring the powerful attacker. Despite that interest, Semenyo ultimately chose to join Guardiola’s side.
Director of Football Hugo Viana welcomed the signing, describing Semenyo as an exciting addition who made it clear from the outset that City was his preferred destination. Viana praised the winger’s pace, strength, technical ability and influence in matches, while also noting his significant potential for further development. He added that Semenyo’s professionalism, work ethic and proven Premier League experience made him an ideal fit for the club.
Manchester City have also highlighted Semenyo’s natural talent, speed and clinical finishing, stating that his skill set is perfectly suited to Guardiola’s attacking style of play. His three-year spell at Bournemouth has provided him with valuable top-flight experience, while his international record adds further pedigree.
Semenyo has earned 32 senior caps for Ghana and will be aiming to feature against England during the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. Before that, he has the chance to pursue major honours at club level, with City still challenging for the Premier League title, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season.
