From Academy Prospect to Mentor
Chester, now 36, rose through Manchester United’s youth academy under Sir Alex Ferguson, earning a senior debut in 2009 during the League Cup semi-final against Derby County. He replaced Gary Neville for the closing stages of a 4-2 victory at Old Trafford—a moment that would see him claim a League Cup winners’ medal when United later triumphed over Tottenham in the final. His time in the first team was brief, but it marked the start of a professional journey that would take him across England’s top divisions.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Chester has returned to Carrington in a coaching capacity, focusing on United’s U15 and U16 squads. The opportunity arose through his close friend and former teammate Paul McShane, who recently left his own role at the club but played a key part in facilitating Chester’s involvement.
Chester is reportedly working with the academy on a voluntary basis as he pursues his UEFA B Licence. He currently spends three days a week at Carrington, contributing his experience to United’s youth setup. His return symbolizes a full-circle moment for the defender who left the club in 2011 when Ferguson sold him to Hull City.
During his time at Hull, Chester became a mainstay under Steve Bruce and etched his name into club history by scoring in the 2014 FA Cup Final against Arsenal. The goal helped Hull take an early 2-0 lead before the Gunners fought back to win 3-2 in extra time. Chester later represented West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Stoke City, Derby County, Barrow, and Salford City before retiring earlier this year.
As Chester begins his new role, Manchester United are also restructuring operations behind the scenes. Ameesh Manek has been appointed as the club’s new Director of Football Operations, a decision that highlights Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s growing influence in football management at Old Trafford.
Manek arrives from Brentford, where he served as Chief Operating Officer and oversaw logistics, facilities, and team operations. His previous experience includes time at Arsenal, managing first-team operations between 2018 and 2020. At United, he will oversee daily activities at Carrington for both the men’s and women’s teams, reporting directly to Sporting Director Jason Wilcox.
Manager Ruben Amorim continues to lead the first team amid scrutiny following a difficult start to the season. Despite fan frustration, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly reassured supporters that Amorim’s position remains secure, emphasizing a long-term vision that grants him three years to shape his project.
United’s upcoming fixture against Liverpool on October 19 at Anfield will serve as a major test for the Portuguese coach. The clash presents an opportunity for United to respond positively after a challenging run, with internal discussions at INEOS expected to focus on performance and progress in the weeks ahead.
