Manchester United Blocks Joshua Zirkzee Move as Roma’s Transfer Hopes Fade
Manchester United have firmly rejected Roma’s interest in Joshua Zirkzee, putting an end to speculation over a January transfer. The Italian club’s sporting director confirmed that Old Trafford has issued a clear "no" to any move for the Dutch striker, leaving him in limbo despite his wish for regular playing time. Caretaker manager Michael Carrick now faces the challenge of managing an unsettled player as United prepare for a crucial trip to Arsenal.

Roma had identified Zirkzee as a top target to strengthen their attack for the remainder of the season. However, Frederic Massara, Roma’s director of football, admitted after their 2-0 win against Torino that negotiations have stalled. "Manchester United said no quite clearly a couple of weeks ago and they have not changed their minds," he told Italian media. The rejection highlights United’s insistence on maintaining squad depth, even if Zirkzee is currently on the fringes of the first team.
For Roma, this public admission signals the need to explore other options. Meanwhile, Manchester United reinforces the message that departures will only occur on their terms, ensuring Zirkzee remains at Old Trafford until season’s end. The forward must now focus on regaining fitness and competing for his place in a squad where the manager’s position is also under temporary leadership.
Zirkzee’s frustration stems from his desire to secure regular first-team football and keep his international prospects alive. Injured at present, he watched United’s derby victory over Manchester City from the directors’ box. A move to Roma could have offered him a higher profile role, increasing his chances with the Netherlands national team ahead of upcoming tournaments.
Aside from Zirkzee, transfer rumors continue to swirl around United, particularly regarding Ruben Neves. Sources indicate the former Wolves captain could join Old Trafford, adding experience and Premier League pedigree to Carrick’s squad. Yet, club insiders stress that any signing must align with long-term planning, a strategy that has already seen United miss out on Antoine Semenyo, who chose Manchester City instead.
Despite the off-field distractions, Carrick’s priority remains preparing his team for a challenging Arsenal fixture. The derby triumph has boosted morale, but the Gunners present a stern test. Shielding players from transfer speculation, particularly surrounding Zirkzee and Neves, will be key as United aim to maintain focus during a decisive period for the club.
