Manchester United Wage Overhaul: Five Stars to Leave in £1m-Per-Week Shake-Up
A significant squad shake-up is being prepared at Manchester United, with plans in place to part ways with five experienced players as part of a broader financial reset. The club intends to reduce its wage bill by more than £1 million per week to support upcoming transfer activity and ease monetary pressures.
Man Utd aim to offload five key players to reduce wages by over £1m weekly, saving £62m yearly and reshaping the squad for future success.

Among those heading for the exit, Casemiro’s departure has already been confirmed for the end of the campaign. Jadon Sancho is also expected to leave once his contract concludes in June. In addition, United are working to finalize permanent deals for players currently out on loan. Marcus Rashford, who is at Barcelona, and Rasmus Hojlund, currently at Napoli, are both included in the list, along with Andre Onana, who is spending the season at Trabzonspor.
The financial impact of these exits is substantial. The club anticipates saving roughly £62 million annually in seasons involving Champions League participation. This measure is viewed as necessary to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules and to maintain competitiveness in the transfer market. While some transfers are already settled, others depend on conditions being met by clubs elsewhere in Europe.
Manchester United’s league position adds another layer of urgency. Sitting third in the Premier League, qualification for the Champions League would activate a 25% wage increase for most players. This rise, combined with £190 million owed in transfer fees this year, places further importance on reducing costs. The exits of Casemiro and Sancho are therefore seen as unavoidable. Plans also include moving Onana and adjusting Harry Maguire’s contract, with the defender expected to remain but on reduced earnings. Savings generated are likely to be invested in a new agreement for Kobbie Mainoo and identifying a long-term midfield replacement.
Looking ahead, strengthening the midfield remains the primary focus. Elliott Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Adam Wharton are among the names being considered. There is also the possibility of signing another central midfielder if Manuel Ugarte leaves, following a difficult period since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and his desire for increased playing time.
