Michael Carrick Wins January Manager Award After Transforming Manchester United Season
Michael Carrick has secured the Premier League Manager of the Month award for January, capping off an extraordinary opening spell as Manchester United’s interim manager. The former United midfielder quickly brought stability to Old Trafford, reviving a team that appeared to be heading toward serious trouble only weeks earlier.

Derby Triumph and North London Statement
Since stepping into the role on January 13, Carrick has delivered impressive tactical performances that saw United dominate some of the league’s biggest sides. Although he only oversaw a handful of matches during the voting window, the scale and impact of his results made him the clear winner, ahead of rivals such as Andoni Iraola and Sean Dyche.
Two standout victories defined Carrick’s award-winning month. The first was a commanding 2-0 win against fierce rivals Manchester City, where defensive organization and fast attacking transitions caused major problems for Pep Guardiola’s team.
That performance was followed by another statement result away to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. United fought back to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory, showing renewed resilience and belief under Carrick’s composed leadership.
Carrick Credits Team Effort
Staying true to his modest personality, Carrick downplayed personal recognition and instead highlighted the contribution of everyone behind the scenes. Speaking at the club’s training base after collecting the award, he stressed that the turnaround was a shared achievement.
“It’s nice and it shows that we’ve had a very good start, you know, but let’s be honest, it’s not just about me really,” Carrick said. “I think it’s about everyone: it’s about the staff, the coaching staff, the backroom staff, and the players definitely. It shows that we've had a good start, which is very pleasing.”
Players Adapting Quickly to New System
One of the most striking features of Carrick’s time in charge has been how rapidly the squad has adjusted to his tactical approach. Mid-season managerial transitions are often difficult, but United have remained organized and effective, also securing wins against Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.
“The boys have been good,” Carrick added. “It’s not easy with change and to click into gear and to perform the way they have done in different types of games has probably been as pleasing as anything.
“Obviously the first two games, in some ways, they take care of themselves because of the emotion and how everyone’s kind of up for them but the games after them have been, for me, just as good to see the boys’ reaction and the quality of the play.
“Going into those games, it was challenging and then, three days before the City game [me and the staff] come in… again, that's why I credit the players for putting themselves forward really, and reacting to change.
“But certainly those two games give you a massive boost of all sorts of emotions to use moving forward, which was the key.
“After those games are done, it’s what happens next and that's what I've been really delighted with, the reaction after that.”
Looking Ahead After Strong Start
United remain unbeaten following a determined draw against West Ham United, and attention has now shifted to how far Carrick can take the team. Even though he is still officially interim manager, the noticeable improvement — often described as the “Carrick Effect” — has replaced crisis with cautious hope around the club.
Winning the monthly award highlights how effectively Carrick has handled one of football’s most demanding roles. Supporters are now enjoying the positive momentum as a club legend proves he can compete with the league’s top managers.
United will not play competitive football this weekend after being knocked out of the FA Cup. Their next match is scheduled against Everton on February 23.
