João Cancelo Becomes First Player Ever to Win League Titles in Four Top European Leagues
FC Barcelona celebrated another La Liga success after defeating Real Madrid CF 2-0 in a decisive El Clasico showdown, but the night also belonged to João Cancelo.
The experienced defender became the first footballer in history to win league titles in four of Europe’s top five domestic leagues, setting a new benchmark that even some of football’s greatest icons failed to achieve.

Barcelona Deliver in Style at Camp Nou
Barcelona entered the clash needing only to avoid defeat against Real Madrid, holding an 11-point lead before the 35th match of the campaign. Instead, Hansi Flick’s side produced another statement performance to officially seal the title.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a brilliant free-kick, becoming the first player since Lionel Messi in 2012 to score directly from a free-kick in El Clasico. Ferran Torres later added the second goal as Barcelona completed a memorable victory at the Camp Nou.
The win secured Barcelona’s 29th league title and extended their impressive run to 11 straight league victories.
Cancelo Finally Captures the La Liga Trophy
The La Liga triumph was especially meaningful for Cancelo after missing out during his previous Barcelona loan spell in the 2023-24 season.
After returning on loan from Al Hilal SFC in January, the former Manchester City FC defender became an important figure in Barcelona’s strong 2026 form.
He started in the title-winning Clasico and contributed one goal alongside three assists in 13 La Liga appearances. Used on both sides of the backline, Cancelo delivered consistency and experience throughout the second half of the campaign.
The Record That Sets Cancelo Apart
Cancelo’s latest title success means he has now won league championships in Portugal, Italy, England, Germany, and Spain’s top divisions — four of them belonging to Europe’s “Top Five” leagues.
His journey includes:
• Primeira Liga success with SL Benfica in 2014
• Serie A glory with Juventus FC
• Three Premier League titles with Manchester City
• Bundesliga success with FC Bayern Munich
• La Liga victory with Barcelona
Only Ligue 1 remains absent from his collection.
Legends Who Could Not Reach the Same Landmark
A number of elite footballers previously came close to matching such an achievement but ultimately fell short.
David Beckham won league titles in England, Spain, and France but never secured Serie A success during his AC Milan loan spells.
Cristiano Ronaldo also collected domestic league titles in England, Spain, and Italy without adding a fourth top league to his record.
Zlatan Ibrahimović enjoyed title-winning spells in Spain, Italy, and France before moving to Manchester United FC. However, United finished sixth in his only full Premier League season despite winning multiple cup competitions.
Players such as Thierry Henry, Kingsley Coman, Dani Alves, Arturo Vidal, Maxwell, Sami Khedira, and Claude Makélélé also won league titles across three major nations.
Uncertainty Over Cancelo’s Future
Despite his successful spell at Barcelona, Cancelo’s long-term future remains unclear.
The club must now decide whether to extend his stay through another loan agreement, negotiate a permanent transfer, or allow him to return to Al Hilal.
There is also the possibility of an even greater achievement ahead. Since Ligue 1 is the only remaining top European league missing from his collection, a future move to France could offer Cancelo the opportunity to complete a historic sweep of Europe’s major championships.
