‎Rene Meulensteen has indicated that Marcus Rashford may still have a future at Manchester United even after his time with Aston Villa and his current spell at Barcelona. The former United coach believes Rashford’s emotional ties to the club remain intact and that recent changes at Old Trafford could allow a future return, as long as both parties communicate honestly.

‎Since leaving United, Rashford has experienced a revival in Spain. While playing for Barcelona, he has recorded four goals and six assists in La Liga matches, while also contributing five goals and three assists in the Champions League. Meulensteen believes these performances highlight how stepping away from the Premier League spotlight has helped rejuvenate the player.
‎In comments made to BetGoat, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant stressed that academy players share a lifelong attachment to their clubs. He maintained that Rashford still carries strong loyalty to Manchester United because he developed there from a young age.
‎Meulensteen further explained that leaving United first for Aston Villa and then Barcelona was a positive move for Rashford’s growth. He compared the situation to Scott McTominay, who left Manchester United and later won the Serie A title with Napoli. According to Meulensteen, both players have performed impressively after leaving England.
‎He highlighted how playing in different countries exposes players to new football cultures, languages, and tactical systems. Meulensteen also pointed out that the Premier League is more physically and mentally demanding than other leagues, while La Liga currently suits Rashford’s playing style. He stressed that enjoyment of football should remain the player’s top priority.
‎Discussing Rashford’s departure from United, Meulensteen noted that the forward experienced a clear drop in confidence and happiness during his final period under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. He suggested that internal club issues may have contributed to Rashford losing enthusiasm during that period.
‎Although United continue to compete strongly in the Champions League, Meulensteen believes major internal changes have occurred. He questioned what factors caused Rashford to lose passion for a club he once loved growing up.
‎Looking to the future, Meulensteen believes time away may have helped both sides reset. With Rashford now happy and performing well in Spain, and Manchester United entering a new phase, a reunion could be possible. However, he emphasised that progress will only happen through clear and honest discussions between Rashford and Manchester United officials.
