‎Speculation over Neymar’s move was sparked by comments from Fluminense’s head of physiotherapy, Nilton Petrone, who called Neymar the "last genius of Brazilian football" on the Setor Sul Podcast. Reports also suggested that Tiago Silva lobbied for the club to pursue his longtime international teammate.
‎Neymar previously came close to joining Fluminense for the Club World Cup. Bittencourt had tentatively agreed with coach Renato Gaucho, but after consulting with his father and agent, Neymar chose to remain at Santos to focus on recovery. Speaking during the tournament, Neymar said he had conversations with several clubs but opted to stay and train to return stronger.
‎Bittencourt’s statement emphasized, "Regarding Neymar, I clarify that there has been no recent contact between Fluminense and the player, or his staff. Fluminense has immense respect for Santos and, obviously, the club and the player are 100% dedicated to winning the remaining games in the Brazilian Championship."
‎Neymar’s return to Santos followed a challenging stint at Al-Hilal, where persistent injuries limited him to just seven appearances. Since rejoining Santos in early 2025, Neymar has scored six goals and provided three assists across 25 games, with his last goals coming in August against Juventude. Santos currently sit in the relegation zone of Brazil's Serie A, with six matches remaining.
‎The 33-year-old’s contract runs until the end of 2025, with an optional six-month extension. Santos president Marcelo Teixeira highlighted Neymar’s commercial impact, though any extension seems unlikely if the club fails to remain in the top division.
‎Despite the denied links to Fluminense, Neymar’s talent ensures that opportunities will arise should he decide to leave Santos. Clubs looking to benefit from the Brazilian forward’s skill and experience will likely remain interested as long as he intends to continue his career.
